Still not frozen, but colder – across the border to the American Falls

As I mentioned in the last post, we decided to go “over the river” to check out the American Falls.  There was a slight delay at the border because everyone was going back home disappointed that the Falls weren’t frozen solid!  (I’m not kidding that’s what the border guard told us.)

The American Falls are quite different in that the only approach is from behind, following the river.  This branch of the river always seems extra wild and choppy – add in some ice and snow and you can pretend you are in the far North!  It was late afternoon at this point, and it felt much colder on this side.

One nice part of the American side of the falls is that it is more park like right by the falls themselves.  So you get surreal scenes like this…

It really looked like a winter wonderland, or if you're a sci-fi fantasy fan like I am, an alternate frozen universe!
It really looked like a winter wonderland, or if you’re a sci-fi fantasy fan like I am, an alternate frozen universe!  Really, I was just waiting for a/the Snow Queen to show up!

Probably due to  a combination of less spray and the prevailing wind direction, there is less ice build up on the American side.  But, you still can get something like this:

One of the other nice things here is you can get quite close to the Falls themselves.  You don’t get the dramatic, awe-inspiring views of the water falling down the cliff but it is still pretty amazing to find yourself next to that powerful flow of (cold!) water.

The American Falls, with Goat Island (and Bridal Veil Falls in the background). It's like those people can reach out and touch the water.

And yes, in case you were wondering, we did see another duck go over the Falls here!  It must be a duck thing to do!  There was a very small raft of them resting in a part of the river that really was pitching and roiling.

Finally, it was time to go.  The lights had come on, and dusk was at hand.

Of course, on the way back to the car, Scott found something he just had to get a shot of – involving breaking trail through knee deep snow!

 I stayed on the path.

That was our Niagara Falls winter adventure!

Hope you are keeping warm!

Galentine’s Day promo!

Yes, it’s Galentine’s Day!  Galentine’s day originated from the show “Parks and Recreation“; when Leslie has her annual party for her female friends, the day before Valentines Day. It’s fun idea.  Why not take matters into our own hands and celebrate ourselves and our favorite women?  The women I know deserve it! So, in… Continue Reading
