Tools of the trade – how a hammer should look

shiny round face

The hammer above is a goldsmith’s hammer that I bought from one of my classmates who was leaving the program.  The main face was in really bad shape.  I’m not sure what happened to it, but it had some really deep gouges.  I had to take it to the belt sander (do not try this at home… and I’m not even kidding about that) and grind a lot away to get a smooth face with nice soft edges.  Then I took it to the polishing lathe and polished away.  Can you see the sky and the clouds in the round face!  That is shiny!

Tomorrow a peek at my hammers.

Take care,

Valerie
